Isabella MacDonald “Pansy” Alden
The Friday tea will be a performance of famous children's author Isabella MacDonald "Pansy" Alden, who lived in the Pansy Cottage on the original Florida Chautauqua grounds in DeFuniak Springs.
Alexa Anne Kempson is the author of the ghost-mystery Manawassa Springs Series: The Lady With The Lantern and The Tiger Door, two books of short-short stories: Twists and Let’s Twists Again, a middle grade book The Mystery at Turtle Beach and co-author of The Bronze Angel. She resides in DeFuniak Springs, Florida, in the historic Pansy Cottage. She is magna cum laude graduate of Duke University with graduate studies at Duke and the University of Iowa. She has five grown children and ten grandchildren. Alexa enjoys acting and performed with little theater in Harrisonburg, Virginia. She now portrays authoress Isabella MacDonald “Pansy” Alden for local audiences. Her other passions include historical research, art, and gardening.
The Saturday tea will be a one-woman production called The Flight of Jackie Cochran written by and starring Nancy Hasty. It is based on the book Superwoman Jacqueline Cochran written by Billie Pittman Ayers and Beth Dee.
As a playwright, Nancy has written numerous plays that have been produced in New York City, as well as internationally, regionally, and on tour. Her play, The Director, starring John Shea, won “Highly Recommended” status from the New York Times and the play is currently under contract for a Broadway run. As an actress, she has performed onstage in NYC and around the country, including several original one-woman shows. Florida Girls has been called “hilarious,” “a one-woman tour-de-force, and “brilliant” by the New York critics. The Flight of Jackie Cochran, which also stars Nancy, has been developed in theaters in New York, Maine, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and as far west as Boulder City, Nevada; in Georgia and her native state of Florida she has performed in over a dozen colleges and theaters. She and her husband, Ray Houseknecht, are currently co-producing the documentary film, The Flight of Jackie Cochran, produced by Dave King and directed by Jessica Anderson. Locally, she will be writing and directing her fifth Grit & Grace production in 2025.
